Mapping Address Services
Requesting an Address
Our mapping standards are based on state mapping requirements. We utilize satellite positioning to properly and accurately address a property. In order to request a new address, the following guidelines must be met.
- Position of structure on property must be marked clearly.*
- Driveway must be marked clearly.*
- Property must be free of hazardous debris and easily assessable. Access must be vehicle passable.
*This can be done with flags, markers, surveyor tape, etc. if the structure is not already in place.
Mapping
Sequatchie County Emergency Communications Mapping Office is dedicated to efficiently and effectively providing E911 addresses for emergency services. As the County continues to prosper, we are consistently upgrading our equipment and services offered to the residents of Sequatchie County. In April of 2007, we purchased a GIS (Global Information System) to improve the quality of mapping and dispatching. Prior to that, the mapping personnel had
to manually calculate distances and measurements and send them to an outside vendor to provide addresses and maps. With the purchase of GIS, all of these services are now completed in-house.
Why GIS?
GIS provides the most accurate information for a structure or road. The GIS uses global positioned satellites to locate a latitude and longitude reading for the markings that are then uploaded in a computer to determine the exact location of the structure. We also update the dispatcher equipment so that their maps reflect the new information at all times and allow them to get the emergency responders to the scene of an emergency quickly and accurately.
Mapping is an exact science. Your address will change every 5.28 feet. This is why if you own 20 acres and need an address, we must know where the structure is being built exactly on the property. The location of the structure determines the address, not the property lines.
How Do I Get An Address?
Once you have clearly marked both the location of the structure and the driveway, give us a call. Be prepared to tell us the location. We will need the road name and the approximate area of the new structure. (The closest address next to the new structure is extremely helpful). We will ask you what side of the road, neighbors, or any landmarks that will enable us to locate the new structure. (If we are unsure of the location, you may be asked to come to the
E911 Center and look at a map to pinpoint the location). We do not have parcel maps, so parcel or lot numbers do not help us locate a property. Once we have determined the location, mapping personnel will physically go to the
new structure with the GIS equipment to obtain the coordinates. Normally, we are able to provide you with an address in 1-2 business days. We try to do this as quickly as possible. Due to inclement weather or the amount of
address requests, there may be a slight delay. Once the coordinates are retrieved, the information is brought back to the E911 Center and uploaded into the GIS computer. The computer provides the address and the map information is updated. You will then receive a phone call from the mapping personnel advising you of your new address.
